It is a technique that uses a high-definition flexible camera to directly visualise the inside of the gastrointestinal tract: oesophagus, stomach and small intestine. It enables both diagnosis — through biopsy sampling — and treatment, such as foreign body removal, without surgery.

It is recommended when the animal presents chronic vomiting, unexplained weight loss, persistent diarrhoea, digestive bleeding, or when ingestion of a foreign body is suspected. It is also the technique of choice for obtaining biopsies of the digestive mucosa to diagnose diseases such as intestinal lymphoma or inflammatory bowel disease.

Solid food fasting of at least 12 hours for adult dogs and 8 hours for cats is essential to ensure the digestive tract is empty and visibility is optimal.
