What do we evaluate in an echocardiography?

Using echocardiography we can see how the heart functions in real time. This allows us to observe chamber size, myocardial wall thickness and how the valves open and close to direct blood flow.

Using advanced techniques such as colour, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler, we can measure blood flow velocity within the heart and detect any valve leakage (murmurs) or narrowed areas that restrict blood passage.

All this information is crucial to establish an accurate diagnosis when your pet presents a murmur, cough, fatigue or fainting episodes. It tells us exactly what medication is needed and at what dose.

Frequently asked questions

Echocardiography is a specific ultrasound of the heart. It allows visualising the size of the cardiac chambers, wall thickness, valve function and blood flow in real time. It is the gold-standard test for diagnosing heart diseases.
Generally no preparation or fasting is required for an echocardiography. We only ask that you bring your pet as calm as possible.
In the vast majority of cases sedation is not needed. The examination is not painful and is performed with the patient comfortably lying on a special table with a cut-out to allow the transducer to be placed from below.
A complete echocardiography, including the Doppler study, usually takes 30-45 minutes depending on the patient's cooperation and the complexity of the pathology.
The written report with representative images and measurements is delivered on the same day of the examination. We send it directly to the referring veterinarian so they can adjust the cardiological treatment.
